Introduction to Oltre Finale
Oltre Finale — literally "beyond Finale" — is the collective name for a string of limestone valleys running inland from the Ligurian coast west of Finale Ligure: Val Pennavaire, Val Varatella, Val Nimbalto, Val Neva, Valle Argentina and Valle Nervia. Where Finale Ligure itself draws crowds to well-polished classics, these valleys were mostly developed in the last twenty-five years and climb with a distinctly modern, technical character — pockets, crimps, and the occasional tufa on compact grey and orange limestone.
All climbing here is bolted sport, fully equipped with lower-offs — there's no trad tradition in this corner of Liguria, so a single rope and a rack of quickdraws is all you need. The valleys are quieter and less polished than the old town crags, which suits climbers looking for fresh rock and a bit of solitude without giving up any of the quality.
The nearest base is the medieval walled town of Finalborgo, with its climbing shops, cafés and gelato, though many climbers stay closer to the valleys themselves around Albenga and Cisano sul Nevo. Either way, the Mediterranean is never far — a swim after a long day on the rock is entirely normal here.
