French 3a–6a

First-timers & mixed-ability groups

Kalymnos is genuinely beginner-friendly: short walk-ins, well-bolted moderate routes across several sectors, and enough easy grades that a mixed-ability group can climb together and still find food, beach and boat trips on rest days.

French 6a–8a

Redpoint & mileage climbers

This is the island's sweet spot: the majority of routes across sectors like Odyssey, Symplegades and Sea Breeze sit in the mid-to-upper grades, on generally excellent rock, with enough volume that a two-week trip won't repeat sectors.

French 5c and up

Multi-pitch & DWS seekers

Genuine multi-pitch (Telendos and a handful of longer lines) and deep-water soloing at Vathy exist here, but both are a small slice of the island's climbing — come primarily for the sport climbing and treat these as bonus days.

French 5a–8b+

Grande Grotta

One of the island's signature cave sectors above Armeos. Climb Europe counts 24 routes; theCrag's live logbook shows 26.

Route counts disagree sharply between sources: Climb Europe lists 186 routes, while theCrag's live logbook shows only 69. This is likely a difference between guidebook and crowdsourced databases rather than an error — flagged here rather than picking one figure.

63 bolted sport routes per Climb Europe's breakdown (13 up to 5c+, 37 at 6a–6b+, 22 at 6c–7a+, 3 at 7b+), separate from the Vathy Fjord deep-water-soloing lines described above.

The standard route: land at Kos (KGS), taxi to Mastichari port, then ferry to Pothia. Ferry duration and fares vary by operator and source (roughly 20–50 minutes, €4–10).

Bolting varies by sector and age

Bolting is generally good and mostly stainless steel, but hardware age and quality vary. Rockfax specifically flags some older hardware to inspect carefully. Check anchors and bolts on your own merits, particularly on older or less-travelled lines.

Emborios, Je T'aime

Sharper rock in specific sectors

Climb Europe flags sharper, less-travelled rock at Emborios and blocky, flaky rock at Je T'aime — take extra care in these zones compared with the polished, heavily-climbed classics.

Vathy

Deep-water soloing has no bolts

The Vathy DWS lines are genuine soloing over water with no fixed protection — only attempt this within your ability and with a boat/support plan, per Mountain Project's guidance.

How many routes does Kalymnos actually have?

It depends who you ask. Mountain Project's own live logbook shows about 1,738 logged routes; Rockfax's guidebook cites roughly 3,000; Climb Europe and theCrag cite 4,200–4,632. There's no single authoritative count — use a current topo for the sector you're visiting.

How do I get to Kalymnos?

Most climbers fly to Kos, taxi to Mastichari port (about 10 minutes), then take a ferry to Pothia on Kalymnos (roughly 20–50 minutes depending on the ferry). Kalymnos also has its own small airport with domestic flights from Athens.

Is there multi-pitch climbing on Kalymnos?

Yes, but it's a small part of the island's climbing — a handful of bolted multi-pitch routes up to 5 pitches (plus one 11-pitch line), and a dedicated multi-pitch area on Telendos.

Is deep-water soloing real here?

Yes — at Vathy, a boat-access fjord on the east side of the island, with roughly 6–14 unbolted routes from French 5c to 8b depending on the source.

What rope length do I need?

70m covers most routes (80–90%, per Mountain Project); 80m gets you close to full coverage; a small number of Telendos extensions need up to 100m.

When's the best time to visit?

Spring (roughly March–June) and autumn (September–November) are consistently recommended across sources. Summer is hot and busy; winter is climbable but wetter with reduced village services.
