Bohuslän is Swedish west-coast granite: short approaches through farmland and forest to clean cracks, faces and slabs, roughly halfway between Gothenburg and Oslo. It's overwhelmingly a trad destination, with real sport and bouldering circuits alongside it.

Introduction

Bohuslän is one of Europe's serious granite trad destinations, but it doesn't feel like an expedition. Crags sit in farmland, forest and along the coast, with most approaches under 20 minutes (UKClimbing). The climbing spans roughly 91-97 named crags depending on the guidebook, with a genuinely broad grade range from moderate trad routes to E9.

Alongside the trad backbone, there's a real sport circuit (roughly 300 routes per climb-europe.com) and a substantial bouldering scene (about 1,000 problems across 20 locations). This page keeps trad, sport and bouldering grades separate throughout - they are three different disciplines with three different grade systems here.

History

The current guidebook, 'Klattring i Bohuslan' by Hanna & Petter Restorp (2015), is credited across multiple sources as the standard reference. A 2010 documentary, 'Crackoholic,' is credited by theCrag and UKClimbing with raising international awareness of the area.

UKClimbing (single-sourced) describes Richard Ekehed inviting Neil Gresham and Leo Houlding to the area around 1999, and notes historical Norwegian first ascents including Slimline (1981) - these specific claims are not corroborated by any other approved source.

Rock and Style

The rock is granite throughout, described as exceptionally solid with a rosy-pink colour (Mountain Project), producing cracks, corners, faces and slabs (thetopo.com, UKClimbing). Some formations are cave-like, notably at Ingalsrod / Granitgrottan ('the Granite Cave') per theCrag.

Protection style varies by crag: some lines are well-protected cracks and corners, others are bold, sparsely-protected slabs and faces (UKClimbing specifically notes skyhook-protected routes at Galgeberget).

Sport climbing exists (roughly 300 routes per climb-europe.com) but has no documented region-wide grade range on our approved sources - the only concrete sport data is sector-specific, at Ingalsrod (Swedish grade 3- to 10, mostly sport, 110 routes, per theCrag). Multi-pitch is present but minor: 'mostly single pitch, with the odd 2-pitch route' (climb-europe.com, UKClimbing).
