In the world of constant news flashes and loud social media, Klemen Bečan flies a little bit under the radar. Climbing media report about his phenomenal ascents in laconic updates and it seems that Klemen doesn’t have time to speak about his achievements. It is perhaps because he spends the majority of his time on the rock, working hard and always having a great time, doing what he loves the most: climbing.
His passion has led him from climbing indoors at the age of seven (pretty unusual nearly three decades ago) to putting up cutting age first ascents such as “Joe Mama” 9a+ and onsighting as hard as 8c+.
Before transitioning to climbing on real rock, Klemen had a very successful career on the competition circuit. As a junior he stood on the highest podium of the World Championships in lead climbing. Later he won both bouldering and lead climbing medals in the World Cup. His pefrormence in both competitions and on the rock was built on a solid foundation provided by the Slovenian climbing team which has bred many excellent athletes including Mina Markovič, Jernej Kruder, Domen Škofic, Maja Vidmar and the youngest phenom, Janja Garnbret.
These days Klemen travels the world with his partner and photographer Anja, searching for the hardest sport routes out there. He has clipped the chains on many 9a and 9a+ routes, many of them spectacular first ascents such as "Water World" in Osp.
Passionate about sharing his love for climbing, Klemen often joins the Rockbusters during our Spanish antics. All May, you can climb with him in Rodellar and learn from his experience.
