Finding Your Perfect Climbing Course: Understanding Our Level System

FEATURED ARTICLE

At Rockbusters, we believe that every climber’s journey is unique. Whether you’re taking your first nervous steps onto real rock or pushing your limits on overhanging 7c projects, we’re here to guide you forward. But to make the most of your time with us, it’s essential to choose a course that matches your current abilities and goals.

Why Levels Matter

Climbing is deeply individual. What challenges one person might find easy, feel difficult for another, and that’s perfectly normal. However, to create the most effective learning environment, we need to group climbers with similar experience levels and objectives. A beginner learning to clip bolts safely has very different needs from an advanced climber working on dynamic moves and complex sequences. Mixing these groups isn’t just inefficient—it can be counterproductive for everyone involved.

That said, we pride ourselves on our personalized coaching approach. On most of our trips and courses, we can accommodate a range of levels within the same group, tailoring instruction to individual needs. The key is ensuring that everyone in the group shares a similar foundation and is working toward compatible goals.

Our Four Levels Explained

BEGINNER

Who it’s for: Climbers taking their first steps on outdoor rock (with at least 3 months of indoor climbing experience), through those leading up to 6a outdoors, but lacking confidence.

What you’ll focus on:

  • Essential safety systems and protocols

  • Lead climbing fundamentals

  • Lead belaying techniques

  • Core climbing technique and movement

  • Building confidence on real rock

If you’re transitioning from the gym to the crag or feel uncertain about your outdoor leading skills, this is your starting point.

INTERMEDIATE

Who it’s for: Solid 6a outdoor leaders progressing toward 6c who handle basic safety, lead climbing, and belaying competently.

What you’ll focus on:

  • Refining lead climbing efficiency

  • Developing mental strategies and managing fear

  • Controlled fall practice

  • More efficient movement patterns

  • Route reading and tactics

You’re comfortable outdoors but ready to climb more confidently and efficiently at your current grade and beyond.

ADVANCED

Who it’s for: Climbers leading 6c to 7b, tackling steep and overhanging terrain.

What you’ll focus on:

  • Advanced techniques: side-stepping, drop knees, flagging, knee bars

  • Power and endurance for sustained routes

  • Complex movement sequences

  • Project management

  • Performance optimization

You’re pushing into challenging grades and need specialized techniques to progress on steeper, more demanding routes.

EXPERT

Who it’s for: Climbers leading 7b and above seeking performance coaching.

What you’ll focus on:

  • RedPointing strategies and tactics

  • On-Sighting techniques

  • Flash attempts and preparation

  • Fine-tuning all technical and mental aspects

  • Personalized performance analysis

You’re an accomplished climber looking to refine your approach and break through plateaus at the highest levels.

Choosing the Right Course for You

Be honest with yourself about where you are right now—not where you hope to be or where you were at your peak. Consider:

  • Your outdoor leading experience: How comfortable are you leading outdoors?

  • Your typical grade: What do you lead consistently and confidently?

  • Your goals: Are you building foundational skills or refining performance?

When in doubt, reach out to us. We’re happy to discuss your experience and recommend the best fit. Remember, there’s no shame in starting at a level that feels comfortable—solid fundamentals are the foundation of all great climbing.
