While most of Europe spends the holidays indoors, Rockbusters runs a two-week sport climbing retreat on the limestone of Sella, Costa Blanca — daytime temperatures of 15–20°C, over 2,000 routes within a short radius, and a small group of climbers who'd rather send than sit through another holiday dinner.
Sella sits inside one of the densest sport climbing regions in Europe, and its limestone runs from blank, technical slabs to steep, tufa-covered overhangs — so the trip covers real variety rather than one style all week. Competición is one of the area's showpieces: long, sustained, fingery routes on perfect rock. El Elefante offers older, blank grey limestone demanding precise footwork on technical slabs. Sectors like Final and the Bear/Guantanamo/Sunrise line are steep, fingery, and sunny most of the day, with routes suited to beginners as well as harder terrain. For climbers ready to push into steeper ground, Hidden Valley and VIPS deliver tufas and overhangs at 7a and up. Most routes run around 30 metres on vertical to slabby terrain, technical on small crimps and pockets — climbing that rewards precise footwork and reading a route, not just power.
Costa Blanca's sun makes Sella climbable year-round, but its most popular sectors face south — exactly what makes it a standout in December, when the rest of Europe is grey and cold.
Some outdoor sport climbing experience is expected — this retreat is built for climbers already comfortable leading routes at 5+/6a minimum, including strong indoor climbers ready to transition their gym strength to outdoor technique. Whether you're breaking into a new grade, refining specific technique, or just want quality mileage in a structured, supportive environment, coaching is tailored to your goals.

The retreat runs as a one- or two-week course, with 6+ hours of climbing time daily across structured sessions built to maximize your mileage. Coaching covers efficient movement, route-reading, mental training, and redpoint strategy, with real-time technical feedback and video analysis worked in on the wall rather than saved for the evening. Groups stay together in a shared, basic climbers' cottage run by locals, right in the Sella community rather than an anonymous hotel — private rooms are available on request for an extra cost. Evenings are for shared cooking, technique debriefs, and planning the next day's objectives. Fly in and out of Alicante.
Do I need outdoor climbing experience for the Christmas retreat?
Yes — this retreat is designed for climbers with some outdoor sport climbing experience, comfortable leading at least 5+/6a, including strong indoor leaders ready to move outside.
What's the weather like in Sella in December?
Mild by European winter standards — daytime temperatures typically run 15–20°C, and the most popular sectors are south-facing, so you're climbing in the sun even in midwinter.
How many routes are there in Sella?
Over 2,000 within a short radius of the retreat base, spanning technical slabs to steep tufa-covered overhangs, so the week doesn't repeat itself.
