A MUERTE: Train Like a World Champion with Patxi Usobiaga

FEATURED ARTICLE

Patxi Usobiaga is the first climber in history to onsight 8c+ — he did it in 2007 on Bizi Euskaraz at Etxauri, Spain — and he's since coached climbers like Adam Ondra and Chris Sharma. A MUERTE is a six-day performance camp built around his personal training system, for climbers stuck at a grade plateau who want a professional diagnosis of exactly what's holding them back.

Why train with Patxi

Usobiaga won two Lead Climbing World Cups back to back and the 2009 World Championship, and has redpointed multiple 9a and 9a+ routes — but A MUERTE isn't a lecture on his career, it's his actual training system applied to you. The camp runs on the PUC Series method: cycles of Accumulation, Transformation, and Realization that Usobiaga developed and uses with the athletes he coaches. Sessions include frame-by-frame video analysis of your movement and center of gravity, and Patxi will assess your strength, point out specific weaknesses, and build a training plan you can keep using after the week ends.

Who this camp is for

This is a high-intensity camp for climbers already established in the sport — the minimum lead grade is 6c/7a. It's built for climbers who are stuck at a plateau and want a professional diagnostic of their climbing, and who are ready for high-volume, high-intensity days on world-class limestone at Rodellar or Margalef.

What's included

Included:

  • Elite coaching: personalized, one-on-one technical instruction tailored to your goals and level
  • Pro guiding: local knowledge with daily route recommendations
  • Technical gear: full access to climbing safety equipment and group hardware
  • Basecamp: shared accommodation in handpicked, climber-friendly hostels or cottages

Not included:

  • Transportation (flights and local travel — shared rental cars can be arranged within the group)
  • Travel and climbing accident insurance
  • Food and drinks

What the camp looks like

The program opens with a comprehensive assessment at Patxi's climbing gym in Coll de Nargó, where he analyzes your strengths and weaknesses before setting the week's direction. From there it's six days of intensive 1-on-1 instruction with an elite 7:1 ratio, covering PUC movement mechanics (advanced flags, drop-knees, heel-hooks at your limit), mental fortitude seminars on managing fear and frustration, the tactical side of redpointing — clipping strategy, resting positions, sequence linking — and conditioning drills for explosiveness and finger strength based on Patxi's own regimen. Every participant leaves with a free one-month training plan designed by Patxi, with the option of long-term follow-up coaching. Accommodation is shared, in handpicked local hostels or cottages, with a private room available on request for an extra fee. Fly in and out of Barcelona.
